Active Adventure

Jinja, in eastern Uganda, is considered the adventure capital of all of East Africa. The river Nile, with its powerful white water rapids, offers great kayaking and rafting opportunities—with options ranging from ‘mild to wild’ to suit all appetites for adventure. All sorts of other adrenalin-fuelled activities have developed around this area, from quad-biking, bungee jumps, jet boats, mountain biking to horseback riding.

Further east, Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls offer abseiling, day hikes and a 4-5 day caldera summit; out west the Rwenzoris deliver a surreally beautiful landscape for the dedicated hiker—on treks lasting anywhere between 3 and 8 days.

Rwanda has an 8 day dedicated hiking and biking trail—the Congo Nile Trail-as well as plenty of day loops available in coffee and tea country. Further south, Nyungwe Forest boasts East Africa’s only Canopy Walk—a walkway suspended at treetop level 90 metres above the forest floor.
